Al-Wa’abah Crater Tour in Saudi Arabia for Adventurers and Nature Enthusiasts
Al-Wa’abah Crater is the largest and deepest volcanic crater in Saudi Arabia, located about 250 km from Taif. It suits hikers and geology enthusiasts interested in exploring unique natural formations.
Description
Wa’aba Crater spans 3,000 meters in diameter and is approximately 380 meters deep. It is surrounded by Al Luhayan, Umm Rilan, and Zabna mountains, creating a distinctive natural landscape.
The crater attracts geologists who study its diverse rock formations. Local legends add cultural interest to this volcanic site, shared among nearby village communities.
The bottom of the crater features a salt dome that shines under the sun. In the summer, the water lake evaporates leaving a sabkha, while wild plants grow along the edges during the rainy season.
One local legend tells of an unfinished love story involving the nearby mountains Tamya, Qitn, and Chliman, which explains the crater’s formation as a result of a jealous mountain destroying Tamya.
