Explore Hegra, also known as Madain Saleh or Al-Hijr, the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Saudi Arabia. This site, dating from the Nabataean kingdom, is the largest settlement after Petra and showcases well-preserved tombs with decorated facades from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD.
During the tour, you will see:
- The Elephant Rock, a natural rock formation resembling an elephant with its trunk touching the ground, a notable geological landmark in AlUla
- Jabal Ikmah, an open-air library featuring thousands of inscriptions in Aramaic, Dadanitic, Thamudic, Minaic, and Nabataean, including some of the oldest Islamic-era inscriptions dating back to 644 CE
Jabal Ikmah stands as the region’s largest concentration of varied ancient inscriptions, reflecting AlUla’s history as a crossroads of civilizations and a caravan way station. The inscriptions carved into the canyon’s rocks have preserved records of travelers and local cultures over centuries.
